Coach K, Wonjin Kim, Olympian, Head Coach / Director

From the moment he first picked up a sword, Coach K, Wonjin Kim dreamed big. He rose quickly through every stage of Korean fencing—middle school, high school, university, and beyond—never once missing the title of champion along the way. His talent and determination carried him to the very top of the sport, earning him a place on the Korean National Team, where he reached the pinnacle as the No.1 ranked épée fencer in Korea.

At just 17, he stood among the world’s best at the Junior World Championships, finishing 10th individually and 4th as a team. By 19, he was crowned Asian Champion. His journey went on to include a gold medal at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, competing as an Olympian at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and becoming a double gold medalist at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. In 2011, he led the Korean men’s épée team to a historic first-ever Grand Prix victory in Paris, a moment that remains etched in the history of Korean fencing.

Yet even as the medals and titles piled up, Coach K began to realize something deeper: the true measure of fencing is not only in victories, but in the character it shapes. At the time, he did not fully grasp what it meant to be an Olympian. Only later did he understand that the Olympic journey was less about the stage itself, and more about the transformation it demands—the perseverance, humility, and growth that define an athlete long after the competition ends.

With this realization, he chose a different path. Despite standing at the height of his career, he retired early from international competition to dedicate himself to coaching. In 2012, he began a new chapter in the United States, bringing with him not only his elite experience, but also a philosophy that would define his life’s work.

Over the past decade, Coach K has trained countless athletes of all levels. His students have grown to succeed in local, national, and international competitions—including World Championships—proving that his methods build not only strong fencers, but also resilient individuals.

At the heart of his coaching lies a simple yet powerful belief: “Excellent Fencing, Excellent Character.”
This is the foundation of Team K. Here, athletes, parents, and coaches grow together, striving not just for medals but for personal transformation. Coach K believes that when individuals become better versions of themselves—through discipline, perseverance, and respect—the results naturally follow, and those small personal victories ripple outward to change the world.

For Coach K, coaching is not a business. It is a calling. Every lesson, every practice, every challenge is an opportunity to build both champions on the strip and strong characters off it. His journey as an Olympian taught him the value of striving for greatness; his mission as a coach is to pass that lesson on, one student at a time.
